FULL BIO

Fernando Nardi is associate professor and director of the WARREDOC (Water Resources Research and Documentation Center) at University for Foreigners of Perugia. His scientific interests pertain to water resources and systems, flood risk management, sustainable and smart urban planning. His research outcomes, featured in major international journals, investigate on hydrologic-hydraulic modelling, geospatial information systems and algorithms, Open/Big Data and Citizen Science with specific focus on the development and application of experimental geomorphic and hydraulic algorithms for monitoring, forecasting and mapping flood risk in complex and ungauged urban, rural and coastal ecosystems.

Prof. Nardi in recent years, while pursuing WARREDOC scientific coordination and leadership, have further extended his research topic and interests by means of trans-disciplinary Collaborations linking water and environmental engineering with social sciences and humanities. In particular, Dr. Nardi coordinates and implements research projects integrating quantitative engineering hydrological studies with socio-cultural investigations for citizens’ and stakeholder’s engagement, monitoring and behavioral analytics. Specific focus of recent works relates to trans-disciplinary studies on water, food and energy security that are supported by both technological physically-based numerical modelling component as well as cultural and behavioural aspects. Major ongoing efforts aim to investigate nature-human interfaces and dynamics for urban, water and environmental safety and sustainability.

A selection of his major institutional appointments include: coordinating and principal investigator roles of research programs developed by Italian national agencies (ISPRA, CREA), European programs (e.g. Climatic-KIC, Water JPI, Horizon 2020, PRIMA) and United Nations agencies (e.g. UNESCO, FAO, UNEP, UNECE); since 2017 chair of the Citizens and Hydrology (CANDHY) working group by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS); HORIZON 2020 SC5 (Climate Action, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials) committee member as national expert. He is an hydraulic engineer and holds a PhD in hydrology (2006) from Sapienza University of Rome.

Dr. Nardi was visiting scholar at Columbia University of New York (2001) and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge (2002-2004). Since 2019 he is visiting professor at the Institute of Environment of Florida International University (FIU) and Sustainable Communities theme coordinator of the FIU UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Water Security. Since 2018 he is adjunct professor, teaching the Hydraulic Infrastructures course, at University of Florence.
